Stepanka Horalkova and her Amazing Porcelain Work

Ceramic artist Stepanka Horalkova was born in a medieval village in South Bohemia in the Czech Republic and moved to New York City in 1995.  She is a self-taught ceramic artist, focusing on porcelain because of its amazing purity that accepts almost limitless textures and colors.  Her handbuilt forms range from functional to abstract, some so thin that they become translucent upon firing.  Her natural images arise in part from her fond memories of visiting her grandmother in the Czech countryside where she wandered the forests to pick wild blueberries, herbs and mushrooms.  The varied buildings of her native village inspire her geometric shapes.  She works with a complex palette of underglazes, stains, glazes, and metallic lusters as well as textures to create exuberant surface detail of clouds, branches, and blossoms to complement her deceptively simple forms.

Some of her formal influences have come from contemporary clay sculptors such as Beatrice Wood, Jun Kaneko, Virginia Scotchie and many others.  “I have always had a love for ceramics,” Stepanka says.  “I find inspiration in all forms and the simplicity of the material.  Each firing produces surprising results; never are two alike.  I fell in love with the unexpected nature of ceramics and have found something that I truly love.”

New Featured Artist - Sarah Bagshaw and her Etsy Shop Sarah Bee Illustration

Hi,

my name’s Sarah Bagshaw and I’ve recently entered the world of Etsy selling! My background in brief is a degree in Fine Art, a Masters in Surface Design and 10 years lecturing in Art and Design in Birmingham, UK. I have two (very active!) young boys, Rudi and Art …..and a baby girl due in the next few months.

I have always made art work of some form or another (painting, printing, computer-aided and papercuts) but have never really had the confidence to do anything with it! I’ve been blogging for a few years but for some reason I didn’t think about using Etsy until a few weeks ago! I have developed a way of working that fits around my job and family, gives me a creative outlet (making me much nicer to live with!!) and I believe this also makes me a better art educator.  I have been obsessed with patterns since my degree many years ago – and this is still a huge interest of mine – at the moment I am exploring hand-drawn patterns drawing from a range of influences from the fields of fine art and textile design.

The plan is to keep developing my work whilst on maternity leave – I just hope this baby is calmer than the boys and likes her sleep! I appreciate every visitor to my Etsy shop and if you have anything specific in mind, then please contact me!
Here is a beautiful (!) treasury that Sarah put together showcasing some of her amazing work:

Hello to all Members (followers) of this blog!

Happy Monday to all!

If you are a new follower, it is really nice to know your name and Etsy store as sometimes your little icon gives only a tidbit of information!  I often like to go check out your Etsy store and add you to my circle.  So, for all of you out there, if you've recently joined or joined in the past, I would love to hear from you!  Just email me at my regular email address:  pamcaughey@gmail.com (not through this blog as I'm not sure that system works too well), and tell me you signed up on the blog, your full name (first and last), and name of your store.  Also, let me know if you'd like to be a featured artist at some point in the future!  It's a lot of FUN!!

Thanks!  I hope to be able to connect your name to your Etsy store soon, and if you email me, this will really help!

Cheers!

HEIDI'S STORY

My names Heidi, and I live in Nottingham in the UK, with husband Phil and our two cats, Tilly and Gizy.

I have always stitched, either by hand or machine, from dolls clothes when I was very young, to my own clothes in my teens and twenties. I studied textiles and art through school and went on to study Costume at Art College, where I learnt how to pattern cut and make wonderful period costume. I loved the big dresses, with corsets and huge underskirts, and great hats! While at college, filming was taking place for Gwyneth Paltrows’ Emma, and I got chance to do some hand embroidered accessories for a close up seen!

My working life has always been, and still is, within the sewing & textiles trade, from fashion pattern cutting, designing and now I work for a domestic machine company on the sales side.

After planning our wedding a few years ago, I rekindled my love of free machine embroidery when I made my own stitched tiara and fascinators for my Mum and Bridesmaids. I also made all the wedding stationery and embroidered napkins for the wedding breakfast.

I loved all the making so much, that I have now taken it a step further and set up my little business, and when I’m not working... I’m stitching! I have designed a range of vintage style wedding accessories, from personalized silk lavender bags and wedding pillows, to personalised hankies and vintage lace garters.

I have also created a range of fascinators, combining my addiction to embroidery and my love of costume and the vintage look. The flowers for the fascinators are all handmade, and each petal is embroidered individually before being stitched together with crystals and wire. The fascinator bases are hand blocked to traditional millinery techniques. Many of the pieces are one off, but some styles can be made in your own colour way to match your outfit perfectly.
