Ceramic artist Stepanka Horalkova was born in a medieval village in South Bohemia in the Czech Republic and moved to New York City in 1995. She is a self-taught ceramic artist, focusing on porcelain because of its amazing purity that accepts almost limitless textures and colors. Her handbuilt forms range from functional to abstract, some so thin that they become translucent upon firing. Her natural images arise in part from her fond memories of visiting her grandmother in the Czech countryside where she wandered the forests to pick wild blueberries, herbs and mushrooms. The varied buildings of her native village inspire her geometric shapes. She works with a complex palette of underglazes, stains, glazes, and metallic lusters as well as textures to create exuberant surface detail of clouds, branches, and blossoms to complement her deceptively simple forms.
